We developed a VR training to help prepare support staff for complex emotional situations. In this training, they practice supporting people with a mild intellectual disability who are in an extreme negative emotional state.
In this training support staff learn how to de-escalate using an appropriate approach. The training focuses on mentalising communication. This involves attuning to the other person’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences. These skills are essential for reducing tension and restoring calm.

The training combines Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence. The AI-driven personas (Virtual Humans) listen and respond to what the trainees say. Their emotional state is reinforced through non-verbal communication, including facial expressions, posture, and movement. Interactions are not limited to predefined responses. Conversations adapt dynamically to what the user says. This closely reflects real-world practice. When mentalising communication is applied effectively, the virtual characters visibly become calmer.
This training makes it possible to:
- translate theory into an actionable experience
- rhave meaningful repeat exercises in a safe space
- gain experience with complex emotional interactions
- train independently
The VR application helps reduce the need for a live training actor and prepare staff for similar situations in the real-world practice.
