The Fair Grounds is the playground of the new media art collective DROPSTUFF MEDIA. The project builds a collection of artworks where amusement rides are presented as art installations.
De Koude Kermis – The Portal is the virtual counterpart of The Fair Grounds, a social VR amusement park. The world and the avatars in De Koude Kermis have been designed inspired by De stijl.
You can enjoy bumper cars where sometimes the cars like to dance by themselves, a VR ride where you can wear goggles that take you on a ride to Venice. Hop onto a merry-go-round and try to hit as many animations as you can. These animations are scanned digital copies of the original zoetrope cards owned by the Amsterdam Filmmuseum EYE. Or you can try your luck by grabbing a virtual cat with the grappler.
All this while people outside of VR can monitor you, and try to pick up your character with a big crane in the sky.
“We’ve worked together with Improvive on different projects in the past. The fast and smooth communication was a delight. The flexible attitude towards changes during the project is one of their strenghts. In the meantime, they hold up to their project planning.”
